THE DIOCESE OF ALASKA

The Missionary District of Alaska was established in 1895, and became a diocese in 1970.  The Diocese of Alaska is composed of 53 parishes and missions along with preaching stations and a camp/conference center. Congregations vary, from Eskimo and Alaska Native villages to mixed urban churches in larger cities and small towns.  Geographically, the diocese includes the entire State of Alaska, divided into four regional deaneries.  The Southeastern Deaneries, which includes Ketchikan, is comprised of the five cities in the Southeastern "Panhandle" of the state. The diocesan office is located 900 miles away in Fairbanks, and houses the staff, state resource office, Network, and the office of the diocesan publication Alaska Epiphany.

Leadership within the diocese is provided by both lay and ordained persons. The diocesan annual convention is hosted in a different community each year, and the clergy conference is held in conjunction with the diocesan convention.
